Segments and custom fields

A segment is a saved filter, such as “signed up in the last 30 days” or “plan is pro”. Campaigns send to segments, and the contacts page uses the same filters.

Every contact has these fields:

Field Type
Email text
Name text
Signed up date
Last sign-in date
Email confirmed yes/no or date

Every other column your view returns, or field you picked on MongoDB and Firebase, is a custom field. Custom fields don’t have a fixed type, so they offer every condition.

For Conditions
Text contains, doesn’t contain, is, isn’t, has any value, is empty
Dates is before, is after (a day), is in the last, is more than (a number of days ago)
Numbers equals, is greater than, is less than
Yes/no is yes, is no

A filter holds up to 20 conditions, joined by All (every condition must match) or Any (one is enough).

Some details:

  • “Doesn’t contain” and “isn’t” include contacts that don’t have the field at all.
  • “Before” and “after” take whole days in your computer’s time zone.
  • “In the last” and “more than” count from now, so a segment like “signed up in the last 7 days” changes from one day to the next.
  • On custom fields, dates must be ISO text such as 2026-10-01, and numbers must be numbers or numeric text. Anything else matches no date or number condition.

On the Contacts page, click Filter, add conditions, then click Save segment and name it. Segments show as chips above the list. Click one to apply it, or click its pencil to edit it.

A campaign picks segments to include and exclude. Its audience is those contacts minus anyone who unsubscribed from everything or from the campaign’s topic, bounced, or marked an email as spam. The audience is worked out when the campaign sends, not when you pick it. So editing a segment changes who gets every campaign that hasn’t sent yet, scheduled ones included.

You can’t delete a segment while a draft or scheduled campaign uses it. Deleting it would remove it from the audience, and a campaign with no included segment goes to every contact. Rowsend names the campaigns that use it.

AI agents can create segments but can’t edit them, for the same reason.
